Endowment fund for literacy
April 30, 2012

The library is pleased to announce the creation of the new Perth Union Library Children's Literacy Fund, an agency fund through the Perth & District Community Foundation. This endowment will ensure the sustainability of the library's summer tutoring and other literacy efforts over the coming years. Read more.

Mango Languages
January 2, 2012

Starting in 2012, the library is providing access to a great new language learning database, Mango Languages. Mango will let you learn the basics of more than 30 langauges through a fun, interactive online experience. Log in from home with your librard card number, then set up a username and password that will allow you to save your lessons and use your computer microphone to test your speaking ability. Connect to Mango through our online resources page. If you have small children, check out Little Pim, with language learning resources in 10 languages for kids 0-5.

Forest of Reading 2012

Forest of Reading 2012 has launched. This year, we are participating in four age groups, allowing kids from 4-18 to read for this provincial program. Check out the kids reading page on our website to see the list of titles. Sign up at the library to get copies of the books.

Paws for a Story
April 5, 2011

As seen in the Perth Courier and EMC Perth during March Break, Chance the Library Dog will be stopping by Saturdays through June to read with kids. Chance is a golden retriever and trained therapy dog. Kids age 6-12 can read to him for 10 minutes to practice their reading skills in a non-judgmental setting. Sessions are April 9 and 23; May 7 and 21; and June 4 from 10:30-noon. Call (613) 267-1224 to sign up.

Forest of Reading open to kids 7-11

The Forest of Reading program has expanded to include the new Silver Birch reading club for kids ages 7-11. Choose fiction, nonfiction, or express books from the posters at the library. Read five or more books in the category of your choice between now and April. Then, join us for a pizza party on Thursday, April 14, to talk about the books and vote on your favourite. Our vote goes on to the Forest of Reading committee and the most popular book from around the province is honoured with the Silver Birch Award. CNIB Library Partners Program

Patrons unable to read print due to physical, visual or learning disabilities are now able to access CNIB materials through the library. Contact library staff for further information.

Forest of Reading Book Club
Dec 13, 2010

Teens are invited to sign up for the White Pine reading club. Read the ten selected books between now and April and come to the pizza party to vote for your favourite. See Laurie for info.

Children's French Books

The library has recently added a collection of French language non-fiction books for children from Kindergarten to Grade 5 as well as a collection of French language graphic novels for children in Grades 3 to 7.

New CEO Appointed

The Perth and District Union Public Library Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Elizabeth Goldman to the position of Head Librarian/CEO.

The councils of the Town of Perth and the Townships of Drummond/North Elmsley and Tay Valley will soon be making appointments to the Library Board for the 2010-2014 term. Interested citizens should contact their municipal office for more information.

Delivery to Home Daycares

The library is now offering a new service to Home Daycare operators. We will arrange to have a selection of children’s books delivered to your door, even if you live in the country. If you are interested, call the Library at (613) 267-1224 and ask to have your name added to a list. We will contact you at a later date with the details.

Film Night Returns

Film Night International is back for another season beginning on Thursday, September 16th with the screening of Mid-August Lunch. This film series is a fund-raiser for the Perth and Smiths Falls public libraries.

Summer Theatre Fund-Raiser

The Classic Theatre Festival at the Studio Theatre has designated the Wednesday, July 28 performance of Blithe Spirit as a benefit night for the library. For all tickets sold to that performance half the proceeds will be donated to the Friends of the Library to assist them in their ongoing fund-raising for the library. Tickets are $30 and are available from Friends members and at the circulation desk. Plan to support professional theatre in Perth and library services at the same time and have a great night out!

Thank You...

Thanks to all patrons for your patience during our recent second floor renovations. The reorganization of our shelving units was required to permit wheelchair access in the adult fiction department as per the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.

New DVDs at the Library
April 12, 2010

Last fall patrons filling in our annual user survey form indicated that their number one wish would be to have more DVDs in the library. We have responded to that request and have recently added an impressive selection of classic BBC, PBS and Masterpiece Theatre productions to our collection. Browse the shelves and find a new favourite drama series!

Poetry Contest

April is National Poetry Month and the Perth and District Union Public Library is having a poetry contest during this month. The contest is open to all ages. Entry forms are available for pick-up at the main desk. Contest closes April 30. Winning entries will be published on this website.

Magazines for Sale
March 15, 2010

Every year at this time we make available for sale all the previous year's magazines. If you are interested in picking up issues of a favourite magazine from 2009, ask the circulation desk staff for more information.

Home Delivery Available
March 08, 2010

If you can't get to the library, then let the library come to you! Our home delivery service provides free delivery and pickup of library materials to patrons who are unable to visit the library due to disability or illness. We have volunteers standing by ready to deliver right to your doorstep. If you feel this service could help you or a family member, call the library at 613-267-1224 for more information.

Borrow Video Games

The library has a selection of Playstation 2, Playstation 3 and Nintnedo Wii video games for lending. Check with the teen department for more information.

Download AudioBooks
January 05, 2010

The library is pleased to announce that our patrons now have access to the OverDrive audiobook collection through our website thanks to a grant from the Ministry of Culture. With a valid library card patrons can download audiobooks to their computer and then transfer them to an MP3, IPod or burn them to CD. Follow the Online Resources link to our AudioBooks page for more information.

New Teen Program
December 14, 2009

Teens, join the Forest of Reading Program taking place from now until April. Read the 5 Canadian books nominated in the White Pine category and then come to our book club pizza party to cast a vote for your favourite. The most popular book wins the White Pine Award. Ask staff for details. Ages 13-18. Sponsored by the Ontario Library Association.

Gaming for Teens
November 30, 2009

Perth Union Library is pleased to announce new programming for teens aged 13-18. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 2:00 - 5:00 teens are invited to drop in at the library and play some of our video and board games. We have a selection of Wii and XBOX360 games to play in our programming room as well as some Playstation 2 games that may be checked out. We have a good variety of board and card games as well.

Successful Bake Sale
November 23, 2009

Thanks to everyone who donated baked goods to our recent sale and who came out to stock up on some really fabulous baking. The sale made $942 for our teen programming budget. Staff will be purchasing additional video and board games for the teen programs held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. A big thanks to Penelope and the Friends of the Library for organizing this very successful fund-raiser.

Lanark Libraries' Ready for Reading Campaign
October 13, 2009

Lanark Libraries have initiated a campaign to encourage all children in the county to have their own library cards. This fall the focus is on children aged 0-6 years. Bring your child to the Perth Union Library and apply for a free "Ready for Reading" library card.

Winners of the "Read to Ride" Bike Draw!
August 31, 2009

Winners of the "Read to Ride" bike draw on August 26th were Alex Purdy, Max Allen, Tori Hutchinson, Liam Clark and Claire Thornton. The bicycles were donated by Perth Canadian Tire, The Friends of the Library and the Perth and District Union Public Library children's program. New Children's Computer

Thanks to a grant from the Ontario Ministry of Culture the Perth Union Library now has a new Early Literacy Station for pre-schoolers to use in the library. Kids can explore and learn from a wide selection of educational titles in a variety of subject areas chosen for age appropriateness, educational value, ease of use, entertainment value, graphics and sound, discovery and growth.

Civitan Donates Wheelchair

The Civitan Club of Perth has very generously donated a wheelchair to the Perth Union Library. This wheelchair will be available on site for anyone visiting the library to use.

French Language Picture Books
May 25, 2009

The library has just purchased 344 French language picture books to support the new kindergarten French immersion program beginning next fall at the Queen Elizabeth Elementary School. They are located in a separate section in the children's department.

New Ancestry Database
May 04, 2009

Those of you involved in genealogical research will be pleased to learn that you will now be able to access the Ancestry Library Edition database free of charge in the library. This online database allows library users to start exploring their family trees by simply typing in a surname.

A two-year subscription for this resource is courtesy of the Ministry of Culture, Southern Ontario Library Service and Ontario Library Service - North.

Film Night Donates Chairs

Next time you are in the library, check out the new leather armchairs in the magazine/newspaper area. These have been donated by Film Night International and were purchased with profits from this year's film series.

Free Computer Training at the Library
March 30, 2009

The library offers free basic training in computer use. You can sign up for a one hour tutorial with a volunteer to learn how to search the Internet, send an e-mail, or use a word processor. Contact the library at 613-267-1224 for more information.

Library Receives Generous Donation

Members of the Perth Union Library Board wish to thank the Civitan Club of Perth for their generous donation of $2,500 for the purchase of magazines for the library. These will be used by patrons of all ages. Thanks to all you hard-working Civitan members for your fund-raising efforts!

The Board and staff of the Perth & District Union Public Library wish to thank the Friends of the Library for their generous sponsorship of the design of our new website.
