DESCRIPTION:When Phyllis Webstad went to St. Joseph’s Residential School for the first time\, she took with her a shiny new orange shirt that her grandmother bought for her. That shirt was taken away and never returned and has become a symbol of the Every Child Matters movement. On September 30th\, we remember and recognize the survivors of residential schools. The Perth & District Union Public Library is honoured to support this movement with a live Storytime in our garden. DESCRIPTION:Intergenerational Storytime – in partnership with Aspira Carolina Retirement Living \nThe Perth & District Union Public Library is excited to host: Intergenerational Storytime. This program will be offered on selected dates throughout the fall and winter and will be held in the main lobby of Aspira Carolina Retirement Living. Parents\, grandparents and caregivers are encouraged to bring their children and grandchildren to enjoy stories\, songs and rhymes with residents from the retirement community\, hosted by the library’s Children’s Librarian. This program is best suited for children ages 18 months – 5 years. \n“The idea of hosting a storytime outside of the library has been percolating for a while and when a community member suggested Aspira Carolina\, it seemed like a good fit. Seeing all ages come together for early literacy is wonderful – it should be an engaging experience for all!” – Heidi Taber \nThe program is free of charge and drop-ins are welcome (no registration required). SUMMARY:Line Follower Challenge with Steampunk Robotics Inc. Ages 8-14
DESCRIPTION:Each day is a stand alone workshop \n At Lego Robotics camp\, participants use LEGO Spike sets to build a robot that can complete a challenge (move items\, complete a maze\, race) or compete against other participants’ sumo-bot creations. Then\, using laptops and Scratch they code their robots and compete\, then solve structural and programming challenges. In the line follower challenge\, the attendees learn how to build a robot that follows a black line. The workings of a line follower robot are pretty straightforward. These robots have the capability to detect a black or dark line on a lighter surface depending on the contrast. They estimate whether the line underneath them is shifting toward their left or right as they move over them. Based on that estimation\, they give respective signals to the motors to turn left or right so as to maintain a steady center with respect to the line. \nParticipants are asked to please bring a snack.
