SUMMARY:Lucky Songs On the Road WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Perth & District Library\, with support from Blue Skies In the Community\, for an afternoon of workshops for songwriters and musicians\, by songwriters and musicians! \n“Lucky Songs”\, a songwriters-in-the-round series hosted by Christine Graves\, first emerged in Ottawa and is now hitting the road in September! The afternoon will consist of three workshops created and delivered by Christine Graves\, umberlune\, & Suzanne Nuttall. Each songwriter will also play a short set of original music! \nEntry by donation – suggested $20.00 or PWYC at the door. \nPlease pre-register below. \nChristine Graves is an exemplary contemporary Canadian folk-roots singer and songwriter. She has created a significant body of work\, releasing five independent recordings on her own label Brave Music and touring Canada and parts of the US. Her love of genre busting\, improvisation\, community participation\, multi-discipline arts and teaching mark her career as a quintessential and generous Canadian performer and creator. Christine spent two years as Artistic Director of Blue Skies Music Festival and five years as alto with the a capella world-music group Malaika. In 2017\, she won a “Songs of Protest Songs of Hope” contest in Ottawa\, bringing her back into the songwriting fold after a hiatus. Songs in a confessional style are Graves’ trademark. Social justice creeps in from time to time and makes inquiry into common issues without alienating listeners. Graves’ guitar playing is a solid back up to her elegant voice. Trained in vocal improvisation\, she will sometimes delight an audience with a spontaneous solo. Everyone feels welcome into her performances. \nChristine’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP3Datq5CtvLw6EgUHgPwg \numberlune (uhm-ber-loon) is a bluesy\, folk singer-songwriter with a punk rock ethos. Nuanced guitar\, knock-your-socks-off vocals\, and whistling solos\, provide the launching pad for vivid\, lyrical vignettes that go deep and then stick around for a while. At times dark or melancholy\, often whimsical\, and always honest\, these songs are undeniably relatable. You’ll catch yourself singing them days later! Following the release of her 2023 debut album\, Pretty Little Bones\, and self-produced official music video for “Ghosts and Skeletons\,” umberlune continues to create new music. You can find her performing in Ottawa and The Valley\, as well as Kingston and The Seaway\, while she works on her future projects. French language single\, “Trois heures du matin” coming soon! Full length album\, Lisp\, expected for release in early 2026. \nWhen not playing music\, umberlune\, alias Sarah Foster\, RMT\, is usually humming along to the songs in her head while working at her day job. \numberlune website: https://umberlune.com/ \nSuzanne Nuttall embodies the spirit of classic folk singer-songwriters mixed with the passion of 1970s soul. Her original songs cover the full spectrum of human emotions: from quiet odes to love and loss\, to joyful rockers sprinkled with glitter and a dash of crunch! Her storied career began in Montreal in the early 90s when she formed roots duo BARE BONES with Patrick Hutchinson. Together\, they released three albums\, played Mariposa Festival twice\, were voted “Best Local Unsigned Band” by readers of weekly newspaper The Mirror in 1994 and toured Canada from Charlottetown to Whitehorse. A music veteran with several musical projects created and spearheaded over the years – including her Toronto soul-funk band SUE de NYM – Suzanne eventually came full-circle and began performing and recording original songs under her own name\, including “Trophy Wife” produced by Michael Phillip Wojewoda. Catch her in her natural habitat… live on stage! \nSuzanne’s “Trophy Wife” music video: https://youtu.be/dYFNvPPqvR8 \nLearn more about Blue Skies in the Community here!

SUMMARY:Library After Dark with School House
DESCRIPTION:The Library After Dark fundraising concert series returns to the Perth & District Library with a concert featuring School House! \nThis summer event\, offered in partnership with Stewart Park Festival\, offers a chance for people who love music to see top notch artists in a unique\, alternative space and support the Perth & District Library.  \nSchool House is a folk band from Ottawa. After moving in together in 2021\, the three best friends discovered that their new home was a century-old school house — inspiring the name and giving them a dedicated space to create. They were awarded Group of the Year at the 2024 Ottawa Music Awards and their debut release was named Album of the Year by Ottawa Faces Magazine.\nTheir sound was born around a campfire\, taking turns sharing songs and joining in three-part harmony. They combine upbeat singalongs with emotive folk ballads to bring a wise\, yet youthful perspective to the Canadian folk music scene. Releasing their debut album in 2023 and an Acoustic EP in 2024; the band has amassed over 500k online streams.  \nDoors open at 8:30 pm and music starts at 9:00 pm. You can also enjoy a beverage from the cash bar during the show\, and spend intermission under the lights of the library garden! Thank you to Perth Brewery for the generous donation of beer! \nIn these final hours before the show\, tickets are now $15! Tickets are available for purchase here or at the door.

SUMMARY:Art of Writing workshop: Leaving Room for the Illustrator in Picture Book Writing with Laura Piggott
DESCRIPTION:Almonte Readers & Writers is pleased to present the June series of Art of Writing workshops and courses exploring aspects of creative and technical skills development in literary arts\, offered as part of the 2025 Lanark Lit Festival of Writing. \nAlthough they may seem simple\, picture books are often one of the most complicated genres to write\, as they combine both a written and visual narrative. Where does one end and the other begin? Is one more important than the other? As a picture book writer\, how do you leave room for the illustrator and the story’s visual narrative? In this workshop\, participants will learn how to pare down text when every word counts – and let pictures do some of the talking. Participants will examine current picture book writing techniques\, including the importance of leaving some things unsaid. Participants will also edit and compose their own written excerpts for a picture book audience. A Question and Answer period may follow the hands-on portion of the workshop if there is interest and time. Participants should leave with a better understanding of how both written and visual narratives work in tandem in picture books.\n*Participants are asked to bring a copy of their favourite\, traditionally-published picture book (published within the last 10 years – this can be owned or borrowed from the nearest public library). Participants are also asked to bring a picture book writing sample or manuscript of their own work for an editing exercise. \nAbout the instructor: \nLaura Piggott is an author/illustrator who loves colour\, wonder\, whimsy\, and magic. Her art and writing both embody a sense of humour and play. She believes that all children should see themselves in the stories that surround them.\nWhen she’s not drawing\, painting\, or writing\, Laura spends her time knitting and sewing; playing the piano\, violin\, and cello; reading books and magazines; and drinking copious amounts of coffee. When the coffee runs dry (or it’s past 3:00 pm)\, you might find her dreaming by the fire with a quilt and a cup of hot cocoa or a glass of bubbly wine. Laura also loves to eat\, cook\, and bake gluten-free food and would never turn down a dinner invitation from Phil Rosenthal or Bobby Flay.\nLaura has an Honours BA in Trilingual Translation and a Bachelor of Education\, both from the University of Ottawa. She also has a post-graduate certificate in Stylistic Editing from Queen’s University. She speaks English\, Spanish\, French\, and Italian. Although she is smitten with travel\, she is the epitome of a homebody.\nLaura lives with her husband\, two teenage children\, and menagerie of pets in Carleton Place\, Ontario.\nLaura is represented by Joyce Sweeney and Elisa Houot at the Seymour Agency. More on Laura can be found by visiting www.laurapiggott.com  \nThe 2025 Lanark Lit Festival of Writing is presented by Almonte Readers & Writers thanks to the generous funding support of Lanark County\, the Municipality of Mississippi Mills\, the Perth & District Community Foundation\, and the Elizabeth Kelly Library Foundation\, with community partnership from the Mississippi Mills Public Library\, the Perth & District Public Library\, Mill Street Books\, Almonte Writers Guild\, and with the community support of Equator Coffee\, OVC Almonte\, Jazzy’s Brewhaus and other local partners. \nPre-registration required via Tickets Please  \nEarly-bird rate: $30 (until April 19)\nRegular rate: $40 \nExplore the full calendar of events for the 2025 Lanark Lit Festival of Writing!

SUMMARY:4-Week Creative Writing Circle: Introduction to Oral Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:A 4-Week Course with Jennifer Cayley\n\nAlmonte Readers & Writers is pleased to present the May series of Art of Writing workshops and courses exploring aspects of creative and technical skills development in literary arts\, offered as part of the 2025 Lanark Lit Festival of Writing.\nThe traditional folk and fairy tales will be the foundation for exploring the world of oral telling and for beginning to find yourself as a teller. These old tales\, rich in imagery and metaphor\, are narrative gems\, which have been polished over hundreds of years. No matter what kind of stories you may want to tell\, or even write\, they are a fine place to start.  \nWorking with this rich material\, you will experience breathing the story in\, learning it “by heart” rather than memorizing it; finding its images and telling out of what those images call forth. You will hear some good stories and undertake practical exercises to assist you in finding your way as a teller. Listening will be a big part of what we do and everyone will have an opportunity to tell in a thought provoking and encouraging atmosphere. \nNo previous experience with telling necessary. All you need to bring is a sense of adventure\, good listening ears\, and some passion for “story.” Come comfortably dressed. \nAbout the instructor:\nJennifer Cayley has been telling stories for more than four decades. Her repertoire includes traditional\, epic\, literary\, historical and personal material. Performance highlights include: collaborating with Jan Andrews on touring The Book of Spells: A Love Story to Rome\, Australia\, Wales\, USA and southern Ontario; appearing at festivals across Canada and once in Hawaii; making regular appearances at the Ottawa Storytellers’ National Arts Centre series; telling the great epics of the world at Rasputin’s Cafe and the National Arts Centre and Taylor Lake\, in Lanark Co. Working with young people\, especially in educational settings\, has always been integral to her storytelling work. Jennifer has had a long commitment to building excellence in performance. She has worked extensively both as a workshop leader and as a mentor to help tellers connect deeply to their material\, so they can create performances that are as compelling and authentic as possible. \nThe 2025 Lanark Lit Festival of Writing is presented by Almonte Readers & Writers thanks to the generous funding support of Lanark County\, the Municipality of Mississippi Mills\, the Perth & District Community Foundation\, and the Elizabeth Kelly Library Foundation\, with community partnership from the Mississippi Mills Public Library\, the Perth & District Public Library\, Mill Street Books\, Almonte Writers Guild\, and with the community support of Equator Coffee\, OVC Almonte\, Jazzy’s Brewhaus and other local partners. \nPre-registration required via Tickets Please \nEarly-bird rate (April 5-19) $100.00 per registration\nRegular rate $120.00 per registration \nExplore the full calendar of events for the 2025 Lanark Lit Festival of Writing!
