SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Colleen Gray
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist talk with exhibiting artist Colleen Gray. \nRSVP below or drop-in! \n“I believe in the power of art to invite healing and discovery.” \nMy Home: I was born and grew up in Petawawa\, Ontario\, Canada; a place made perfect by the local beach\, deep-hole swamps\, turtle ponds and the beauty of the Canadian Shield – sacred ground for a curious child. My Mother’s people are Mi’kmaq and Acadian and my Father’s people are the smiling Irish. I was not raised in my culture but I have been living and working according to the tenants of my Ancestors for most of my life. I’m proud of my Indigenous heritage and the values we live by. \nMy work: I paint from my personal experiences and observations. Inspiration comes in many forms. I try to walk in a good way and hope I am bringing benefit to the world through the work I do. My core belief system is rooted in kindness; I believe in art’s kindness and in its power to invite positive change into our lives. \nI enjoy working in several mediums\, but my passion lies in watercolour on synthetic paper. The sometimes the unpredictable effects of this platform are exciting and unique. When it’s done with dedication\, it becomes a meditative process that teaches us to slow down\, minimize our scope\, and focus on the smaller details. \nCultural spirituality features prominently in my work. The stories are a vital component of my artwork – all of life has a story. My work often reflects the state of our only home\, the Earth. Art is a voice and my hope is that my work speaks to the heart.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Lanark County Voices … There’s a Place for Me Here
DESCRIPTION:“Lanark County Voices … There’s a Place for Me Here” features thirteen incredible members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community\, offering you a glimpse of what their lives are like in Lanark County. This documentary weaves their stories together into a vital archive of their insights\, struggles and hopes for the future. You will hear how people have built a community; how\, amidst many positive changes\, the continued need for progress persists. \nThis screening serves two purposes. For those who are on their own journey\, hearing perspectives and observations from those interviewed we hope will provide a sense of support and community solidarity. \nSecond\, we hope this documentary will nurture community with allies and the broader public—both in feeling and in action—by serving as an inspiration for greater acceptance and valuing diversity.

SUMMARY:Orange Shirt Day: Community Beading Workshop
DESCRIPTION:When Phyllis Webstad went to St. Joseph’s Residential School for the first time\, she took with her a shiny new orange shirt that her grandmother bought for her. That shirt was taken away and never returned. It has become a symbol of the Every Child Matters movement. On September 30th\, we remember and recognize the survivors of residential schools. The Perth & District Library is honoured to support this movement with a community beading workshop led by Shelley Bourgeois.\n\n\nParticipants will learn how to bead an orange shirt pin that they can wear in support of and to spread awareness of Orange Shirt Day. Please note\, the beaded pins take 2+ hours to complete.\n\nThis program is free and open to 14+. Materials are provided. Bring your own snacks. Bring reading glasses if needed!\nDonations are welcome to help cover the cost of supplies.\n\nPlease RSVP below.

SUMMARY:Lucky Songs On the Road WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Perth & District Library\, with support from Blue Skies In the Community\, for an afternoon of workshops for songwriters and musicians\, by songwriters and musicians! \n“Lucky Songs”\, a songwriters-in-the-round series hosted by Christine Graves\, first emerged in Ottawa and is now hitting the road in September! The afternoon will consist of three workshops created and delivered by Christine Graves\, umberlune\, & Suzanne Nuttall. Each songwriter will also play a short set of original music! \nEntry by donation – suggested $20.00 or PWYC at the door. \nPlease pre-register below. \nChristine Graves is an exemplary contemporary Canadian folk-roots singer and songwriter. She has created a significant body of work\, releasing five independent recordings on her own label Brave Music and touring Canada and parts of the US. Her love of genre busting\, improvisation\, community participation\, multi-discipline arts and teaching mark her career as a quintessential and generous Canadian performer and creator. Christine spent two years as Artistic Director of Blue Skies Music Festival and five years as alto with the a capella world-music group Malaika. In 2017\, she won a “Songs of Protest Songs of Hope” contest in Ottawa\, bringing her back into the songwriting fold after a hiatus. Songs in a confessional style are Graves’ trademark. Social justice creeps in from time to time and makes inquiry into common issues without alienating listeners. Graves’ guitar playing is a solid back up to her elegant voice. Trained in vocal improvisation\, she will sometimes delight an audience with a spontaneous solo. Everyone feels welcome into her performances. \nChristine’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP3Datq5CtvLw6EgUHgPwg \numberlune (uhm-ber-loon) is a bluesy\, folk singer-songwriter with a punk rock ethos. Nuanced guitar\, knock-your-socks-off vocals\, and whistling solos\, provide the launching pad for vivid\, lyrical vignettes that go deep and then stick around for a while. At times dark or melancholy\, often whimsical\, and always honest\, these songs are undeniably relatable. You’ll catch yourself singing them days later! Following the release of her 2023 debut album\, Pretty Little Bones\, and self-produced official music video for “Ghosts and Skeletons\,” umberlune continues to create new music. You can find her performing in Ottawa and The Valley\, as well as Kingston and The Seaway\, while she works on her future projects. French language single\, “Trois heures du matin” coming soon! Full length album\, Lisp\, expected for release in early 2026. \nWhen not playing music\, umberlune\, alias Sarah Foster\, RMT\, is usually humming along to the songs in her head while working at her day job. \numberlune website: https://umberlune.com/ \nSuzanne Nuttall embodies the spirit of classic folk singer-songwriters mixed with the passion of 1970s soul. Her original songs cover the full spectrum of human emotions: from quiet odes to love and loss\, to joyful rockers sprinkled with glitter and a dash of crunch! Her storied career began in Montreal in the early 90s when she formed roots duo BARE BONES with Patrick Hutchinson. Together\, they released three albums\, played Mariposa Festival twice\, were voted “Best Local Unsigned Band” by readers of weekly newspaper The Mirror in 1994 and toured Canada from Charlottetown to Whitehorse. A music veteran with several musical projects created and spearheaded over the years – including her Toronto soul-funk band SUE de NYM – Suzanne eventually came full-circle and began performing and recording original songs under her own name\, including “Trophy Wife” produced by Michael Phillip Wojewoda. Catch her in her natural habitat… live on stage! \nSuzanne’s “Trophy Wife” music video: https://youtu.be/dYFNvPPqvR8 \nLearn more about Blue Skies in the Community here!

SUMMARY:Great Canoe Adventure Day! CURRENTLY FULL
DESCRIPTION:Each Adventure Day will be at or near your local library\, giving us a chance to explore your neighbourhood’s ecosystems from the water. The schedule features three “stations”: the canoe tour\, building a birdhouse\, and a wild survival workshop\, along with many team-building games and citizen science activities. During the canoe tour\, we will revisit key concepts like wetlands\, watersheds\, food webs\, biodiversity\, invasive species\, plant and animal identification\, the water cycle\, and the history of  indigenous peoples’ relationship with land and water. We will also collect water samples for testing later. Participants\, both children and adults\, must sign the waiver as part of registration to go in the canoes. Parents are welcome to join us. While on the water\, there’s a target ratio of one adult for every three younger children (aged 5-7). One adult will be present for every five children who are eight years of age or older. Eva Moons\, an outdoor education teacher from Ottawa\, will lead the Wild Survival session. Recent news stories have highlighted frightening situations of kids alone outside. This workshop aims to empower and educate kids on how to cope and solve problems if they find themselves in such situations. It will cover navigation\, map reading\, and other fun skills. To ‘build’ on our bird research\, we will construct wooden birdhouses for common backyard species. This activity involves basic math\, geometry\, carpentry\, and a touch of artistry. To give the canoe guides time to prepare for their final trip\, after our second break\, we’ll hold a physics lesson\, game\, and contest with renowned science teacher Peter Au. We will end the day with water testing of our collected samples\, benthic examining (squirmy things we find in the water)\, and a closing circle.\n\n\n\nReserve a ticket for each participant including parents and please fill out this waiver
