Wetlands are Water Wonders- Get to know Your Local Ecology Superhero!

July 15 , 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Free

Learn about Wetland’s water cleaning powers and use some of those strategies to become Eco-Sidekick in the battle for Earth’s Future!

If the forests are the lungs of the planet, then the wetlands are the kidneys. They serve as super filters that allow for so many great things. Increased resistance to invasive species, enhanced biodiversity, mitigation of floods and drought, carbon sinks, and habitat for 1000’s of important animals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects, crustaceans, mollusks, and other invertebrates. We will be doing water cleansing experiments based on what we can learn from wetlands and brainstorm some ways to use those techniques in the future. INTERESTING FACT: Estimates put 25 per cent of the world’s remaining marshes, bogs, swamps and other cattail-lined, carbon-rich water bodies inside Canada’s borders. However, they are being still being eliminated at an alarming rate. We need to get our big-brain environmental stewards of tomorrow on this immediately! If you could bring 1 or 2 small clear (like a small water bottle) plastic bottle (one for yourself and one to share) we will be building water filters. DO NOT go out a buy a plastic bottle (we do not want to encourage producers), just keep your eyes out on recycling day. It is even better if it has a top.
