The Seed Library is now open at the Perth & District Library. Every spring, the Perth & District Library sets up a seed lending library – a free exchange designed to promote healthy, local food and a stronger community.
Anyone is welcome to borrow packets of seeds for their garden. In return, the library asks borrowers to harvest seeds and contribute them back to the seed library in the fall, creating a perpetual collection.
“The seed library is one of the library programs I enjoy most each year,” says Emily Fournier, Library Specialist. “Planning my garden gets me through the last few weeks of winter, and collecting seeds for the library at the end of the summer has become a fun and educational activity for our whole family.”
For those new to harvesting seeds, the library is also offering a seed saving workshop on April 21 at 5:30pm. ‘Seed Saving for the Home Gardener’ will be hosted by Maureen Bostock, a retired market gardener who, with her partner Elizabeth, ran a very successful market garden at Sweet Meadow Farm in Balderson. Maureen will educate participants on the principles and methods of seed saving, and introduce some unexpected pollinators.
The Seed Library is now open, and can be accessed on the main floor of the Perth & District Library anytime the library is open and while supplies last. For more information, or to register for the Seed Saving Workshop, visit www.perthunionlibrary.ca or call 613-267-1224.
